18. Truths and Lies

Grysin was gone when Sage awoke though he had told the White to wake him. As he went about his days, Sage felt like a part of him was physically missing.

“You alright, Sage?” Maxim asked, brows furrowed in concern as they sat in the dining hall the second day.

He and Sayroph were doing their best to spend time with Sage, but it was hard with them having a different training schedule. Sage’s whole daily routine was thrown off, by being on leave and Grysin being gone. He forgot to eat that whole first day until dinner without his partner there to remind him.

Sleeping was worse. Nightmares held him in their dark lock long after he woke from them without a cool body holding him and fingers stroking his hair. New horrors were plaguing him as well. He relived the demon knave’s attack and almost losing Grysin once a night, waking up with wet tears on his cheeks and his partner’s name on his lips.

“Aye, I’m fine,” Sage lied, poking at his stew.

He didn’t miss his friends exchanging a concerned glance. He also felt other eyes on him, probably not used to seeing him without a handsome white dragon hanging off of him. Sage was sure the shadows under his eyes didn’t help.

“Maybe Grysin is on his way back already,” Maxim said. “What his parents wanted him for couldn’t be that important.”

Sayroph grunted but said nothing. Sage had a suspicion she knew or guessed something she wasn’t telling him or Maxim.

The third day, Sage avoided the dining hall, not wanting to be stared at, and headed straight for the library. It was quiet between the tall shelves. Sage opted for a table other than their usual window seat, two towers of books on either side and a sheet of parchment in front of him for notes. As he flipped through the first book, the lines of text started to blur as his mind wandered. He wondered how Grysin was doing, having had to fly home to a family whom he hadn’t seen in years. Who didn’t want him. Sage couldn’t imagine it. He’d give anything to ask his own birth parents why they had left him.

“Damnit!” Sage growled under his breath, burying his face into his arms on top of the book.

He should’ve gone with Grysin. He missed him fiercely, achingly, like one would a limb that was no longer there but you could still feel. They had spent most of the past five years together. They had been trying years, but Sage also couldn’t remember a time when he was happier. He could picture Grysin’s face clearly, those icy blue eyes that saw through to his soul and the soft smile Gry wore just for him.

Did he...love the white dragon?

Sage’s heart skipped a beat at the thought, which thus confirmed his question. He was in love with his partner. For how long? Since...forever?

And could Grysin...? Did the white dragon love him back? With how his partner acted, it was possible.
